What do you hope to get out of church. Do you go along because it is just the Sunday thing to do and it has no effect on your life. Perhaps you go just to get a high which gives you the ability to cope with the coming week. I thought I would look at the Parable of the Sower to see if I could shed some light on what happens when we come away from a church service, and perhaps other ways to look at this.
Two things I feel I want when I go to church.
• To be taught about God, and how to follow Jesus
• To encounter God through music, prayer and the teaching of the Bible
The parable of the sower is an interesting story that we could relate to our attendance to church. If we used each situation and see which one relates to our experience then we can do something about it. Like find something that is said and apply it to our week ahead.
Ok here’s a question. Do you remember what was said on Sunday if you attended church
If not then does this apply: –
As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them.
We just forget.
Or when you get to work, school, pub or where ever there are non believers you deny your faith in God
Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died.
Or are you getting stressed, and say you cannot possibly remember
Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants.
We all hope that our words will bring people closer to God. Perhaps this Sunday take something away that you can share during the week, whether it is words or actions. It maybe just a simple thing like making someone a cup of tea, or a deep conversation. Whatever. If you forget what is said in a sermon, perhaps do what I do and take a notepad, and write things down. Later look over your notes, pray over them and have a plan of action to live out one point that was made.
